What Doctors Are Saying About Vax-D
If you are one of the millions of Americans
who experience acute or chronic Low Back Pain, there are some things
you absolutely need to know about your condition and the latest
new therapies that have recently been developed. These technological
breakthroughs may enable you to get your problem fully resolved
without surgery or complicated, risky, and invasive procedures.
More
than 90% of Americans are afflicted with back pain at
some point in their lives that can become very
debilitating and emotionally draining. Until now, if you suffered
from low back pain or Sciatica, treatment may have included bed
rest, muscle relaxants, pain medication, physical therapy, and perhaps
even surgery. Most, and almost all, common therapy for back pain
such as injections of cortisone, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory
medications, are completely ineffective in correcting the actual
cause of the low back pain. Most of the time surgery is not a viable
option and often results in failed low back syndrome. Don't let
this happen to you!
Why do I feel this way? Because we have seen what happens after
surgery and often it can cause more disability than before the surgery.
Most people receive inappropriate care from a hospital, medical
doctor or physical therapy clinic. Most of these doctors are not
trained in the latest techniques for proper analyzation and correction
of the underlying biomechanical causes of a person's back pain.
The main reason most people have low back pain is because they failed
to take the proper preventative measures to insure a strong, supportive
spine capable of years of pain-free living.
Your spine is the second most important organ besides your brain
for the body to function maximally, so treat it that way. Remember
nothing is more important than your health. Unfortunately, most
people only discover this when they begin to lose it.
If you are in pain right now and have suffered for a long time
and are considering surgery, injections, or something drastic to
relieve your symptoms, then I am about to tell you of something
that may change your life forever. If you go through with surgery,
you may experience pain, numbness, headaches, muscle stiffness,
fatigue, weakness, and other problems such as fibrosis and arthritis
for many years down the road. Not only that, surgery is expensive;
at least $35,000 to $60,000.

The Treatment of
Choice is "VAX-D"
VAX-D Therapy is a primary, active, non-surgical treatment modality
for the management of patients with disabling low-back pain and
neurological symptoms. The therapy is designed to relieve pressure
on structures that may be causing low pain. It relieves the pain
associated with herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, posterior
facet syndrome and radicular pain. VAX-D achieves this through decompression
of intervertebral discs and facet joints, that is, unloading, due
to distraction and positioning.
The therapy combines a number of Internationally patented principles,
which are administered via an automated system incorporated in the
design of the Therapeutic Table and Control console. The cyclic
application of distractive forces coupled with controlled relaxation
phases, as applied with VAX-D Therapy, facilitates accommodation
of the patient and relaxation of muscle groups. The VAX-D Therapeutic
table is operated by the therapist in order to apply precisely controlled
tension, along the linear axis of the spinal column, in sufficient
strength to distract the vertebral bodies and distract the intervebral
discs and posterior facets of the lumbar spine. Each therapy session
is 30 minutes in duration, comprised of a fully automated therapeutic
process which is continually monitored by a precision recording
instrument incorporated on the VAX-D Table. A chart tracing of the
parameters achieved during each therapy session is printed to form
a permanent record for the patient's chart.
A baseline tension is applied and maintained during each therapy
session by a movable section of the table, called the pre-tension
housing. This takes up the slack in the pelvic harnesses, and maintains
the desired tensions applied to the pelvis throughout the rest periods
of the session. The VAX-D Table is a split table design that eliminates
frictional resistance between the patient and the table, and allows
controllable effective distraction tensions to be applied to the
lumbar vertebral column. The equipment incorporates a patented system
engineered to apply distractive forces in a gradual, progressive
fashion, designed to achieve optimum distraction of the vertebral
bodies, without eliciting reactive reflex muscular resistance. The
therapy is administered via an automated logic control mechanism
which systematically applies distractive tensions and rest periods
in a cyclic fashion. This periodic process allows patients to withstand
stronger forces than can be tolerated by static techniques and promotes
accommodation and relaxation during the therapy session.
The upper body is fixed by means of the patient grasping adjustable
hand grips, designed to eliminated the use of a chest harness. Consequently,
there is no risk of circulatory and respiration compromise. This
is a critical design feature, considering the tensions applied.
The pelvis is secured with a specially designed, patented, harness
that adjusts snugly and is made to apply forces primarily to the
lateral pelvic alae thus minimizing anterior-posterior pressures.
Contra-indications include pathological lesions or congenital
deformities and/or conditions that disrupt the integrity of the
vertebral and ligamental structures. Progressive pathological or
severe inflammatory processes of the spinal joints also constitutes
contraindications for VAX-D Therapy.
VAX-D Therapy is a safe, cost effective, and conservative management
program designed to address today's large volume of patients with
musculoligamentous and discogenic pain. An important component of
the VAX-D Therapy program is patient education by our doctors, as
a better posture, lifting restrictions, exercise and appropriate
body dynamics and mechanics, to promote low-back health and also
to enhance the patient's prognosis after treatment.

Commonly Asked Questions
Q: So what is the safest, and most cost-effective
approach to treating low back pain due to nerve compression, herniated
disc, trauma or osteoarthritis?
A: It is called VAX-D therapy. This stands
for Vertebral Axial Decompression. The therapy
is designed to relieve pressure on the structure such as a "spinal nerve" that
may cause low back pain or Sciatica. VAX-D
therapy relieves the pain associated with herniated disc, degenerative
disc disease, lumbar pain and pain radiation.
Q: Who invented VAX-D therapy?
A: VAX-D therapy was developed by Dr. Allen Dyer, a world-renowned medical
researcher who invented the cardiac defibrillator that went around the glove
to revive heart attack victims. Dr. Dyer holds an M.D., a PhD., and a pharmaceutical
degree. He is the former deputy minister with Ministry of Health in Ontario,
Canada.
Q: How does it work?
A: The therapy combines a number of Internationally
patented principles, which are administered via an automated system
incorporated in the design of the Therapeutic Table and Control
Console. The cyclic application of distractive forces coupled
with controlled relaxation phases, as applied with VAX-D Therapy,
facilitates accommodation of the patient and relaxation of muscle
groups. The VAX-D Therapeutic table is operated by the therapist
in order to apply precisely controlled tension, along the linear
axis of the spinal column, in sufficient strength to distract
the vertebral bodies and distract the intervertebral discs.
Q: How long does VAX-D take?
A: Each therapy session is 30 minutes in duration, comprised of a fully automated
therapeutic process, which is continually monitored by a precision recording
instrument incorporated on the VAX-D Table and VAX-D Therapist. A chart tracing
the parameters achieved during each therapy session is printed to form a
permanent record for the patient's chart.
Q: What is so different about VAX-D rather than normal traction?
A: The equipment incorporates a patented system engineered to apply distractive
forces in a gradual, progressive fashion, designed to achieve optimum distraction
of the vertebral bodies, without eliciting a reactive muscular reflex. The
therapy is administered via an automated logic control mechanism which systematically
applies distracive tensions and rest periods in a cyclic fashion. This periodic
process allows patients to withstand stronger forces than can be tolerated
by static techniques and promotes accommodation and relaxation during the
therapy session.
Q: Once my problem is handled, how do I keep the pain from happening
again?
A: An important component of our VAX-D therapy program is patient education
by our doctors, as to better posture, lifting restrictions, proper exercises,
and appropriate body dynamics and mechanics, to promote low-back strength and
also to enhance the patient's prognosis after treatment.
Q: Are there any reasons why a person could not undergo VAX-D
Therapy?
A: Contra-indications include pathological lesions or congenital deformities
and/or conditions that disrupt the integrity of the vertebral and ligamental
structures. Progressive pathological or severe inflammatory processes of the
spinal joints also constitute contra-indications for VAX-D Therapy.
Q: What research has been done on VAX-D to prove its effectiveness?
A: VAX-D Therapy is not experimental. In 1998, Vol. 20, Number 3 from the Journal
of Neurological Research proved that VAX-D Therapy was 71% successful in
a group of 778 patients for reducing pain at an average level of 4.16 before
the study, on a 0-5 scale to an average of 1.82 after treatment in people
with herniated discs. Patients with only a single disc herniation reduced
from 4.16 to 1.09, or a 71% reduction. Overall, 71% of the patients experienced
a decrease in pain to a 0 or a 1, 92% of the patients were improved. This
study was only done with 10 pulls; clinically the average VAX-D case is usually
20-30 pulls.
Q: How much does his therapy cost in relation to surgery?
A: The average Low Back surgical case is currently between $30,000 - $60,000
for surgery, compared with the average treatment for VAX-D at $3,000 - $7,000.
Q: Will my insurance company pay for VAX-D instead of surgery?
A: In a majority of cases they will pay up to 100% of the treatment due to
the fact that it is F.D.A. approved and has shown clinically significant
results. Additionally, it may save them thousands of dollars if surgery was
recommended as a treatment option to you.

What Doctors Are Saying About "Vax-D"
June 24, 1998
Dear Dr. Allan Dyer,
Thank you for VAX-D. It enabled me to get my life back!! Twice!!
I am now working with VAX-D patients after 10+ years of not being
able to work.
In 1987 I herniated 2 discs. In 1989
I had a bi-level laminectomy-discectomy L4-L5, L5-S1. The first
words I heard after surgery were "You
will probably require more surgery." I had relief until mid
1991. Then the same symptomatology as pre-surgery. I was classified
as "Failed Back." In 1994 I was told the only way I would
ever get any relief was to have my lumbar area
cleaned up and a fusion with rods and screws.
I did not want another surgery as I
am very much into alternative medicine. In October 1995, I found
VAX-D! I had 45 pulls in 7 weeks with Dr. Hyman. I was quote a "Challenge." I
had remarkable results! I got feeling back in my left leg and
foot and the back pain was gone. I was able to take classes to
become a massage therapist. Because I live 130 miles from the
VAX-D facility and my insurance company failed to see the importance
of my maintenance pulls, I got to where I was homebound again
because of the pain. I was back where I was! Not a good feeling
or place to be - because I knew there was relief with VAX-D.
On September 10, 1997, I began VAX-D therapy at the Spine Institute
of the Desert. Again, I had remarkable results at a much faster
rate than the first series because of the modalities used. My pinched
nerve was released during the 12th session versus the 24th at the
other facility. November 4th, rehab exercises were introduced along
with the VAX-D. In March, I began working with Dr. deBoer at the
Spine Institute operating the VAX-D table in addition to supervising
rehab exercises and massage therapy. I find it very rewarding to
see other people experience relief from their pain and know they
are able to enjoy life without surgery. It is my goal to help more
people experience this same relief from pain.
I have maintenance pulls once a month. To date I have had 90 sessions.
Thank you again! I am most grateful to have my life back!!
Sincerely,
Jan Robinette

Dear Dr. Dyer,
In my experience working with patients at the American Back Center
in Chicago since December 1994, VAX-D has been approximately 75%
successful in relieving sciatica pain in MRI confirmed herniated
discs with nerve root compression which correlates precisely with
the patient's symptoms and his/her neurological findings.
Due to medial-economic reality, post VAX-D treatment MRI scans
on these patients were not done. However, I can state on clinical
grounds that nerve root compression is relieved by VAX-D Therapy
in at least 75% of the patients we have treated with that pathology.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Dr. Dyer
I wanted to write you and let you know of the great success we
have having with our Vax-D patients. Since January 1, we have done
50 patients and have had major successes with all but three. I think
the 75% cure rate give in the literature is conservative! Virtually
all of our patients are thrilled with the treatments.
I find that the average patient needs 25 treatments, but the range
has been 12-47. I was pleasantly surprised to see that even patients
with nerve compression, with sciatics, with absent knee and ankle
reflexes or sensory deficits are getting return of function! Needless
to say it makes for happy patients and a happy doctor.
You have solved a major problem for mankind. You are to be commended.
Thank you for your continuing support.
Sincerely,
David Minkoff, M.D.

Dear Dr. Dyer,
I am writing this to let you know how pleased my patients are
with the VAX-D treatments. I have now had more than 100 patients
treated with the VAX-D and over 76% of these patients have had greater
than 50% reduction in their pain levels and many of these patients
have lost the burning, stinging, shooting type pain in their legs
and back since being on this treatment modality. These patients
have been extremely happy because this does relieve their symptoms
without surgery. One patient who had had back pain for 16 years
was completely free of pain after 12 treatments and has maintained
a much lower level of medications since the treatments. It was most
thrilling to hear him tell me that this was the first time in 15
years that he did not have pain.
I feel that this treatment will help millions of patients with
low back pain at a greatly reduced cost and will not alter the anatomy
of the body as surgical procedures do.
My patients have expressed to me an overwhelming satisfaction
to this treatment and have thanked me immensely for helping relieve
their pain without back surgery.
I would like to thank you for inventing this wonderful form of
treatment for my patients.
Sincerely,
Daniel A. Boudreau, D.O
